In the fourth match of the T20 World Cup, New Zealand defeated Afghanistan by five wickets. The Group D match was played in the Indian city of Chennai, where Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bat first. The Afghan team scored 182 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs. In response, the Kiwis chased down the target of 183 runs in the 18th over. For New Zealand, Tim Seifert scored 65 runs and Glenn Phillips added 42. Daryl Mitchell scored 25, while Mitchell Santner remained not out on 17 runs.

The tournament features 20 teams divided into four groups. On the opening day of the event, three matches were played. Pakistan played their first Group A match against the Netherlands and secured a victory.
