The Ashes series, which is considered a ‘war’ between England and Australia, has begun. The first day of the Test in Perth went to bowlers, with a total of 19 wickets falling in one day. The Ashes series began with the Perth Test in which the visiting England won the toss and batted first, but their batsmen could not stand up to Mitchell Starc’s brilliant bowling and the team was bowled out for 172 runs. For England, Harry Brook scored 52, Ollie Popp scored 46 and Jamie Smith scored 33.

Australia’s Mitchell Starc took a career-best 7 for 58, while Brendan Doggett took 2 wickets. In reply, the Australian team also struggled, scoring 123 for 9 at the end of the first day and needing another 49 runs to overcome the deficit of the English team.

For Australia, Alex Carey scored 26, Cameron Green scored 24 and Travis Head scored 21 runs. England’s captain and all-rounder Ben Stokes took 5 wickets for just 23 runs, while Jofra Archer and Brydon Carr took two wickets each. Thus, a total of 19 wickets fell on the first day of the Perth Test. It has been 116 years since 19 wickets fell on the first day of a Test match in the Ashes series. According to Cricinfo, 20 wickets fell on the first day of the Old Trafford Test of the Ashes series in 1909. After that, 19 wickets have fallen in the Perth Test of the Ashes in 2025.
