Indian Test captain Shubman Gill broke several records by playing a smoky innings of 161 runs on the fourth day of the second Test against England. He scored a total of 430 runs after scoring 269 runs in the first innings.
In the second Test match played at the Edgbaston Ground in Birmingham, Shubman Gill broke several records held by batsmen like Brian Lara, Tendulkar, Sangakkara, Kohli and Gavaskar by showing brilliant batting in both the innings. Shubman Gill holds the record for scoring the most runs by any Indian captain in a Test match. Earlier, Kohli had scored 254 runs against South Africa in 2019.
Shubman Gill’s first innings of 269 became the highest score by an Indian batsman outside Asia, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s 241 against Australia in the Sydney Test in 2004. However, he fell six runs short of the record of Asian Bradman Zaheer Abbas, who had scored 274 in England in 1971, which is still the highest score by an Asian batsman outside Asia.
The Indian captain also showed excellent batting in the second innings and scored 161 runs to take his individual score to 430 runs in both innings of the Test and thus also won the title of scoring the most runs by an Indian in a Test, before that Sunil Gavaskar had scored 344 runs.
Shubman Gill has become the second batsman in the world to score the most runs in a Test with 430 runs, the first being former England captain Graham Gooch, who scored a total of 456 runs against India at Lord’s in 1990. In this list, former Australian captain Mark Tucker is third with 426 runs, Sri Lanka’s Sangakkara is fourth with 424 runs and West Indies’ Brian Lara is fifth with 400 runs, however, Lara scored 400 runs in a single innings.
Shubman Gill has become the only batsman in the history of Test cricket to score a double century in one innings and 150+ runs in the second. Before him, Australian captain Allan Border had scored 150+ runs in both innings.
